Essays: Intro - Music - Form & Language

As seems to be the pattern throughout Book Four, here is another example of the pop music of the Temple period: light, happy-clappy etc, religious equivalents of "She Loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah" and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" - she in this case being YAH, and the one being asked to provide the nanny-glove YHVH. They work like Nursery Rhymes, or the frescos in Catholic churches (before the Protestants whitewashed them out!): for the illiterate in Biblical times, which was 98% of women and a significant percentage of men, these songs were the way to inculcate religious faith, loyalty and as much understanding as was necessary for obedience to the sacred-king, his civil servants, his army, and his priests. Other Psalms in this anthology were clearly intended for the intellectuals and the spiritual pilgrims; but not these.
Nor should it surprise anyone that Leonard Bernstein, that maestro of pop music pretending to be opera, should have included Psalm 100 in his Chichester Psalms; in addition Psalm 108 for Parts 1 and 2, 23 for Part 2, and 131 and 133 for Part 3). You can listen to them here.

100:1 MIZMOR LE TODAH HARIY'U LA YHVH KOL HA ARETS

KJ (King James translation):
(A Psalm of praise.) Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

BN (BibleNet translation): Music for thanksgiving. Shout out to YHVH, all the Earth.

100:2 IVDU ET YHVH BE SIMCHAH BO'U LEPHANAV BIRNANAH

KJ: Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

BN: Worship YHVH gladly; come into his presence with singing.

BIRNANAH: Or BI RENANAH? Look up the many previous instances of RANANAH and determine whether this is singing, dancing, or a more general term for all the forms of celebration. HAVA NERENANAH VE NISMECHAH...

100:3 DE'U KI YHVH HU ELOHIM HU ASANU VE LO ANACHNU AMO VE TSON MAR'IYTO

KJ:
Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

BN: Know that YHVH is god; {N} he made us, and we are his, his people, and the flock of his pasture.

Cf Psalm 95:7 et al.

100:4 BO'U SHE'ARAV BE TODAH CHATSEROTAV BIT'HILAH HODU LO BARACHU SHEMO

KJ:
Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

BN: Enter his gates with gratitude, and his courts with praise; give thanks to him, and bless his name.

BIT'HILAH: Or BI TEHILAH?

100:5 KI TOV YHVH LE OLAM CHASDO VE AD DOR VA DOR EMUNATO

KJ:
For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

BN: For YHVH is good; his lovingkindness is eternal; and his fidelity endures from generation to generation. {P}

YHVH and only YHVH, no other name, no other deity, so much as mentioned; as we have been witnessing throughout Book Four, we have truly entered the epoch of the Omnideity.
