Shin'ar

שנער

Genesis 10:10; 11:2; 14:1; Isaiah 11:11; Zechariah 5:11; Daniel 1:2 et al.

The area around Bavel (Babylon), though in Syriac it refers to the specific region around Baghdad. The early Genesis references make it the kingdom of Nimrod. Probably it was the land known as Sumer or Sumeria, called Sangar in some Egyptian writings, Shan-ar in documents discovered at Tel el-Amarna.

Various attempts have been made by Hebrew scholars to give the word a meaning based on a Yehudit root; an entirely pointless task alas, since it is perfectly obvious that the word is not rooted in Yehudit, but in one of the ancient Chaldean languages, probably Emegir.
