Nimrod

נמרד

Genesis 10:8-12: son of Kush (כוש - Cush), founder of Bav-El (Babylon), Erech (Uruk)and Akkad, the principal regions of Shin'ar. His travels.

This places Kush clearly in Babylonia, which conflicts with other references to Kush, which make it a name for Ethiopia. See, for example, GICHON.

Micah 5:5 speaks of Nimrod the Assyrian who will attack Beit Lechem Ephratah (Bethlehem), and the Messiah who will come from there to defeat him.

The root Namer (נמר) gives "leopard" and "tiger" in various languages (cf Jeremiah 5:6 and Habbakuk 1:8); so why does Gesenius prefer to define Nimrod as "rebel", without giving a root?

Legends of Nimrod abound in the Talmud, and are especially linked to Av-Raham.
