Genesis 50:23: a son of Menasheh (cf Numbers 26:29) and used poetically for the tribe as a whole.
Judges 5:14 includes a mention of him in the song of Devorah (Deborah) and Barak.
2 Samuel 9:4: the son of Ami-El (עמיאל) with whom Yehonatan's (יְהוֹנָתָן - Jonathan's) son stayed (cf 17:27) in Lo-Devar (לו דבר).
The root means "sold", from Machar (מכר) = "to sell". NB Machir's grandfather was Yoseph, who was indeed "sold", to the Beney Yishma-El (Genesis 37:25) , or possibly the Beney Midyan (Genesis 37:28), by his brothers, and by them to Poti-Phera (Potiphar) in Mitsrayim (Egypt).
