Girgashim

גרגשים

Genesis 10:16 names them as a tribe of the Beney Kena'an.

Genesis 15:18-21 includes the Beney Girgash among the tribes and tribal areas promised to Av-Raham in this version of the covenant with YHVH. The land extends "from the river of Mitsrayim as far as the great river, the river Perat (Euphrates)"; the others are the Keyni (קֵּינִי - Kenites), the Kenizi (קְּנִזִּי - Kenizzites), the Kadmoni (קַּדְמֹנִי - Kadmonites), the Chiti (חִתִּי - Hittites), the Perizi (פְּרִזִּי - Perizzites), the Repha'im (רְפָאִים), the Emori (אֱמֹרִי - Amorites), the Kena'ani (כְּנַעֲנִי - Canaanites), and the Yevusi (יְבוּסִי - Jebusites ).

Joshua 24:11 names the Girgashites among those who, alongside the citizens of Yericho (Jericho) fought the Beney Yisra-El as they completed their conquest of Kena'an. As above, the list also names the Emorim, Perizim, Kena'anim, Chitim, and Yevusim, but on this occasion lists the Chivim, but leaves out the Kadmonim and the Repha'im.

The root means "dwelling in a clayey soil", which suggests more about the region they inhabited than who they actually were.
