Genesis 10:11 names it as a city of Nimrod in Ashur (Assyria).
2 Kings 17:6 and 18:11 mention a town named Chelach (חלח - with a first-letter Chet, not Chaf) as being a province of Ashur to which the ten tribes were taken by Shalman-Ezer, and Kalach (כלח) may be an error for this. Chelach, or Chalach, is identified with Calachene, on the Armenian border.
