Genesis 36:32 and 1 Chronicles 1:43 name him as the father of Bela, an Edomite king.
Numbers 22:5 and Deuteronomy 23:5 on the other hand name him as the father of the prophet Bil'am (Bala'am). Does this infer that Bela (בלע) and Bil'am (בלעם) are in fact variations on the same name (and if so, is that name Ba'al?)? Or that one or the other is simply a scribal error?
The name means "lamp" or "torch".
