KJ: Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the LORD put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that the LORD had commanded.
BN (BibleNet translation): "So, now, Betsal-El and Ahali-Av will undertake the work, and with them every skilled craftsperson, whom YHVH has instilled with both passion and ability, to produce all the items that are needed for the service of the Sanctuary, based on what YHVH has instructed."
The verse appears to start in mid-sentence, which is entirely possible in the Yehudit version, which does not have the chapter breaks that are present in Christian and other (including, now, most Jewish) translations. In the previous verse, Exodus 35:35,
Mosheh was explaining the role and work of Betsal-El and Ahali-Av:
my translation picks up from there, assuming this verse to be Mosheh still
speaking, still explaining. The phrasing of the next two verses confirms this - first he calls them up, then they begin the work. The use of the Vav Consecutive is nonetheless odd, and suggests that a later editor, probably reading this as separate chapters and not realising the connection, attempted to narrativise what was originally speech.
CHACHAM LEV: "wise-hearted" is literally accurate, but it again avoids that significant difference between our epoch and theirs, that we regard the brain or psyche or something mental to be the source of knowledge, wisdom and understanding, and call it rational and objective, where the ancients understood the subjectivity of all these things, and located them in the heart. In fact, from several previous encounters with this term, it is clearly an idiom for somebody who has learned a skill. The equivalent in English terms is the word "mystery", which has religious connotations, but only because the priests are trained in its esoterica; in the Middle Ages a plumber or plasterer would have been trained in the "Mystery" of plumbing or plastering - look up the website of any of the "worshipful companies" and you will see this to be so in every case.

But if we do stay with the traditional translation of CHACHAM LEV as "wise-hearted", is there not something rather offensive in the constant repetition of the phrase, especially when it is followed by further endorsements such as CHACHMA BE LIBO and KOL ASHER NESA'O LIBO: those who support and give are wise-hearted; by definition, those who don't...? And if so, then I have to wonder how much this would be the voice of the Redactor, using the "model" of Mosheh to encourage the Yehudim of his own day, probably at the behest of Nechem-Yah (Nehemiah) and Ezra, to do the same for the completion rebuild of the city wall and especially the Temple then.

VE HEM HEVIY'U...BA BOKER: How infinite is thy jewelery, ye erstwhile bondsmen of Mitsrayim! Whereas Ach-Mousa did indeed have the full resources of the nation at his disposal. And Shelomoh (Solomon) likewise, for the First Temple. Alas Zeru-Bavel did not, for the Second.

Morning assembly - I wonder if they said prayers as well as taking the register?
Their being CHACHAM does seem practically the most important theme of the whole episode. And yet, how different is this from the holy work they were performing previously in Mitsrayim (Egypt), building the sacred store-cities of Osher (Osiris)? Do we now have a picture of what "slavery in Egypt" was really about? Jewish plumbers and masons and blacksmiths and carpenters - how to credit such an idea today? Mein son the brick-layer!
36:5 VA YOMRU EL MOSHEH LEMOR MARBIM HA AM LEHAVIY MIDEY HA AVODAH LA MELA'CHAH ASHER TSIVAH YHVH LA'ASOT OTAH
וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֶל מֹשֶׁה לֵּאמֹר מַרְבִּים הָעָם לְהָבִיא מִדֵּי הָעֲבֹדָה לַמְּלָאכָה אֲשֶׁר צִוָּה יְהוָה לַעֲשֹׂת אֹתָהּ
KJ: And they spake unto Moses, saying, The people bring much more than enough for the service of the work, which the LORD commanded to make.
BN: And they spoke to Mosheh, saying: "The people are bringing far more than we need to carry out this work which YHVH has instructed us to do."

וַיְצַו מֹשֶׁה וַיַּעֲבִירוּ קוֹל בַּמַּחֲנֶה לֵאמֹר אִישׁ וְאִשָּׁה אַל יַעֲשׂוּ עוֹד מְלָאכָה לִתְרוּמַת הַקֹּדֶשׁ וַיִּכָּלֵא הָעָם מֵהָבִיא
KJ: And Moses gave commandment, and they caused it to be proclaimed throughout the camp, saying, Let neither man nor woman make any more work for the offering of the sanctuary. So the people were restrained from bringing.
BN: And Mosheh issued an instruction, and they had it proclaimed throughout the camp, saying: "Ladies and Gentlemen, do not do anything more by way of bringing offerings for the sanctuary." So the people were restrained from bringing.
How wise! And honestly, my translation is not intended facetiously. Ish va ishah, it begins. And the form of AL YA'ASU mirrors that of the Ten Commandments. "Do not".
This utterly miraculous amount of gold and silver and brass and jewels and cloth that keeps being found, and which was probably not a consequence of raiding parties going out into the desert to pirate the secret stores of the local Bedou, can only be explained as a miracle of story-telling later on, for in story-telling, yea and verily, all things are possible, including the impossible. But necessary. The redaction of the Tanach is for a purpose, and a key part of that purpose is the inspiring of the people to fund the completion of the Second Temple in Yeru-Shala'im. Look how your ancestors rallied to the task - now it is your turn.
36:7 VE HA MELA'CHAH HAYETAH DAYAM LE CHOL HA MELA'CHAH LA'ASOT OTAH VE HOTER
הַמְּלָאכָה הָיְתָה דַיָּם לְכָל הַמְּלָאכָה לַעֲשׂוֹת אֹתָהּ וְהוֹתֵר
KJ: For the stuff they had was sufficient for all the work to make it, and too much.
BN: For the amount they had collected was sufficient for all the work that needed to be undertaken - indeed, too much.
Dreadful phrasing - in the Yehudit! And note the word that is used in Yehudit for "stuff" - MELA'CHAH! Do we need to rethink the nature of Sabbath work yet again?

אֹרֶךְ הַיְרִיעָה הָאַחַת שְׁמֹנֶה וְעֶשְׂרִים בָּאַמָּה וְרֹחַב אַרְבַּע בָּאַמָּה הַיְרִיעָה הָאֶחָת מִדָּה אַחַת לְכָל הַיְרִיעֹת
KJ: The length of one curtain was twenty and eight cubits, and the breadth of one curtain four cubits: the curtains were all of one size.
BN: Each curtain was twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide; all the curtains were the same size.
All these details can be found in Exodus 26. The methodology of the writing follows the pattern of Creation throughout the Tanach, including divine creation: first the announcement, then the action - though in this case the two are many chapters apart.

LULA'OT: as opposed to LULOT in the previous verse; we have seen this variation before and I remain convinced that it is simply sloppy work by the man who did the pointing (ha ish ha lo chacham lev).
MACHBERET: similarly here; we had both MACHBERET and MACHBARET in the previous verse, but the meaning and grammatical context in each case was identical, which is to say identicle, so one of them has to be wrong.
ACHAT EL ECHAT: And yet again. And perhaps there are obscure grammar rules that I am simply missing, but if so, then I am missing them won by one (and in the next verse, they are indeed ACHAT EL ACHAT, so I really don't think this is me).

וְאַרְבָּעִים אַדְנֵיהֶם כָּסֶף שְׁנֵי אֲדָנִים תַּחַת הַקֶּרֶשׁ הָאֶחָד וּשְׁנֵי אֲדָנִים תַּחַת הַקֶּרֶשׁ הָאֶחָד
KJ: And their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board.
BN: And their forty sockets of silver: two sockets under one plank, and two sockets under another plank.
36:27 U LE YARKETEY HA MISHKAN YAMAH ASAH SHISHAH KERASHIM
וּלְיַרְכְּתֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן יָמָּה עָשָׂה שִׁשָּׁה קְרָשִׁים
KJ: And for the sides of the tabernacle westward he made six boards.
BN: And for the rear of the Mishkan, facing westward, he made six planks.
36:28 U SHENEY KERASHIM ASAH LIMKUTS'OT HA MISHKAN BA YARCHATAYIM
וּשְׁנֵי קְרָשִׁים עָשָׂה לִמְקֻצְעֹת הַמִּשְׁכָּן בַּיַּרְכָתָיִם
KJ: And two boards made he for the corners of the tabernacle in the two sides.
BN: And he made two planks for the corners of the Mishkan at the rear end...
36:29 VE HAYU TO'AMIM MI LEMATAH VE YACHDAV YIHEYU TAMIM EL ROSHO EL HA TABA'AT HA ECHAT KEN ASAH LISHNEYHEM LISHNEY HA MIKTSO'OT
וְהָיוּ תוֹאֲמִם מִלְּמַטָּה וְיַחְדָּו יִהְיוּ תַמִּים אֶל רֹאשׁוֹ אֶל הַטַּבַּעַת הָאֶחָת כֵּן עָשָׂה לִשְׁנֵיהֶם לִשְׁנֵי הַמִּקְצֹעֹת
KJ: And they were coupled beneath, and coupled together at the head thereof, to one ring: thus he did to both of them in both the corners.
BN: ...so that they could be doubled up underneath, and in like manner they could be closed at its top, by the first ring. Thus he did to both of them, in each of the two corners.
36:30 VE HAYU SHEMONAH KERASHIM VE ADNEYHEM KESEPH SHISHAH ASAR ADANIM SHENEY ADANIM SHENEY ADANIM TACHAT HA KERESH HA ECHAD
וְהָיוּ שְׁמֹנָה קְרָשִׁים וְאַדְנֵיהֶם כֶּסֶף שִׁשָּׁה עָשָׂר אֲדָנִים שְׁנֵי אֲדָנִים שְׁנֵי אֲדָנִים תַּחַת הַקֶּרֶשׁ הָאֶחָד
KJ: And there were eight boards; and their sockets were sixteen sockets of silver, under every board two sockets.
BN: And there were eight planks, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets: under every plank two sockets.
36:31 VA YA'AS BERICHEY ATSEY SHITIM CHAMISHAH LE KARSHEY TSELA HA MISHKAN HA-ECHAT
וַיַּעַשׂ בְּרִיחֵי עֲצֵי שִׁטִּים חֲמִשָּׁה לְקַרְשֵׁי צֶלַע הַמִּשְׁכָּן הָאֶחָת
KJ: And he made bars of shittim wood; five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle,

36:32 VA CHAMISHAH VERIYCHIM LE KARSHEY TSELA HA MISHKAN HA SHENIT VA CHAMISHAH VERIYCHIM LE KARSHEY HA MISHKAN LA YARCHATAYIM YAMAH
וַחֲמִשָּׁה בְרִיחִם לְקַרְשֵׁי צֶלַע הַמִּשְׁכָּן הַשֵּׁנִית וַחֲמִשָּׁה בְרִיחִם לְקַרְשֵׁי הַמִּשְׁכָּן לַיַּרְכָתַיִם יָמָּה
KJ: And five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the tabernacle for the sides westward.
BN: ...and five bars for the planks on the other side of the Mishkan, and five bars for the planks of the Mishkan for the rear end facing westward.
36:33 VA YA'AS ET HA BERIYACH HA TIYCHON LIVRO'ACH BETOCH HA KERASHIM MIN HA KATSEH EL HA KATSEH
וַיַּעַשׂ אֶת הַבְּרִיחַ הַתִּיכֹן לִבְרֹחַ בְּתוֹךְ הַקְּרָשִׁים מִן הַקָּצֶה אֶל הַקָּצֶה
KJ: And he made the middle bar to shoot through the boards from the one end to the other.
BN: And he made the middle bar so that it could pass through along the centre of the planks, from the one end to the other.
36:34 VE ET HA KERASHIM TSIPAH ZAHAV VE ET TAB'OTAM ASAH ZAHAV BATIM LA BERICHIM VA YETSAPH ET HA BERICHIM ZAHAV
וְאֶת הַקְּרָשִׁים צִפָּה זָהָב וְאֶת טַבְּעֹתָם עָשָׂה זָהָב בָּתִּים לַבְּרִיחִם וַיְצַף אֶת הַבְּרִיחִם זָהָב
KJ: And he overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold to be places for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold.
BN: And he overlaid the planks with gold, and made rings out of gold for them, to serve as retainers for the bars, and he overlaid the bars with gold.
36:35 VA YA'AS ET HA PAROCHET TECHELET VE ARGAMAN VE TOLA'AT SHANI VE SHESH MASHZAR MA'ASEH CHOSHEV ASAH OTAH KERUVIM
וַיַּעַשׂ אֶת הַפָּרֹכֶת תְּכֵלֶת וְאַרְגָּמָן וְתוֹלַעַת שָׁנִי וְשֵׁשׁ מָשְׁזָר מַעֲשֵׂה חֹשֵׁב עָשָׂה אֹתָהּ כְּרֻבִים
KJ: And he made a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen: with cherubims made he it of cunning work.
BN: And he made the veil in blue, and purple, and scarlet, using fine, twined linen; with Keruvim creatively woven into them.
36:36 VA YA'AS LAH ARBA'AH AMUDEY SHITIM VA YETSAPEM ZAHAV VAVEYHEM ZAHAV VA YITSOK LAHEM ARBA'AH ADNEY CHASEPH
וַיַּעַשׂ לָהּ אַרְבָּעָה עַמּוּדֵי שִׁטִּים וַיְצַפֵּם זָהָב וָוֵיהֶם זָהָב וַיִּצֹק לָהֶם אַרְבָּעָה אַדְנֵי כָסֶף
KJ: And he made thereunto four pillars of shittim wood, and overlaid them with gold: their hooks were of gold; and he cast for them four sockets of silver.
BN: And he made for it four pillars out of acacia, and overlaid them with gold, their hooks being of gold; and he cast for them four sockets of silver.
36:37 V YA'AS MASACH LE PHETACH HA OHEL TECHELET VE ARGAMAN VE TOLA'AT SHANI VE SHESH MASHZAR MA'ASEH ROKEM
וַיַּעַשׂ מָסָךְ לְפֶתַח הָאֹהֶל תְּכֵלֶת וְאַרְגָּמָן וְתוֹלַעַת שָׁנִי וְשֵׁשׁ מָשְׁזָר מַעֲשֵׂה רֹקֵם
KJ: And he made an hanging for the tabernacle door of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, of needlework;
BN: And he made a screen for the door of the Tent, in blue, and purple, and scarlet, using fine, twined linen, the woven-work in colour.
36:38 VE ET AMUDAV CHAMISHAH VE ET VAVEYHEM VE TSIPAH RASHEYHEM VE CHASHUKEYHEM ZAHAV VE ADNEYHEM CHAMISHAH NECHOSHET
וְאֶת עַמּוּדָיו חֲמִשָּׁה וְאֶת וָוֵיהֶם וְצִפָּה רָאשֵׁיהֶם וַחֲשֻׁקֵיהֶם זָהָב וְאַדְנֵיהֶם חֲמִשָּׁה נְחֹשֶׁת
KJ: And the five pillars of it with their hooks: and he overlaid their chapiters and their fillets with gold: but their five sockets were ofbrass.
BN: And also its five pillars, with their hooks; and he overlaid their capitals and their fillets with gold; and their five sockets were of brass.
