8:1 KOL HA MITSVAH ASHER ANOCHI METSAVCHA HAYOM TISHMERUN LA'ASOT LEMA'AN TICHEYUN U REVITEM U VATEM VIYERISHTEM ET HA ARETS ASHER NISHBA YHVH LA AVOTEYCHEM

כָּל הַמִּצְוָה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם תִּשְׁמְרוּן לַעֲשׂוֹת לְמַעַן תִּחְיוּן וּרְבִיתֶם וּבָאתֶם וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְהוָה לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם

KJ (King James translation): All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

BN (BibleNet translation): All the laws that I am placing on the statute book for you today, shall be observed and carried it out, in order that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which YHVH promised your ancestors.


ANOCHI: Not Ani; this is the formal language of a legal documen.

TISHMERUN... TICHEYUN: Ditto with these verbal gerundives. As we have seen several times already in this book, a far more sophisticated grammatical form than any used by Mosheh previously. In other texts we would have expected ATEM TISHMERU... ATEM TA'ASU.


8:2 VE ZACHARTA ET KOL HA DERECH ASHER HOLICHECHA YHVH ELOHEYCHA ZEH ARBA'IM SHANAH BA MIDBAR LEMA'AN ANOT'CHA LENASOT'CHA LADA'AT ET ASHER BI LEVAVECHA HA TISHMOR MITSVOTAV IM LO

וְזָכַרְתָּ אֶת כָּל הַדֶּרֶךְ אֲשֶׁר הוֹלִיכְךָ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ זֶה אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה בַּמִּדְבָּר לְמַעַן עַנֹּתְךָ לְנַסֹּתְךָ לָדַעַת אֶת אֲשֶׁר בִּלְבָבְךָ הֲתִשְׁמֹר מִצְו‍ֹתָו אִם לֹא

KJ: And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

BN: And you shall remember the journey on which YHVH your god has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not.


LEMA'AN ANOT'CHA: Another splendid example of the merciful and compassionate deity role-modelling the loving of one's neighbour. Why would anyone wish to follow such a god?

IM LO: To which the answer will in fact prove to be: no. In The Book of Shoptim (Judges) they will do "as they see fit in their own eyes"; of the kings, only David, Yoshi-Yah (Josiah) and Chizki-Yah (Hezekiah)will follow YHVH, all the rest will follow other gods, and right through the nine hundred years from the death of Mosheh to the return from exile under Zeru-Bavel, there will be Prophets railing against idol-worship et cetera.


8:3 VA YE'ANCHA VA YARIVECHA VA YA'ACHILCHA ET HAMAN ASHER LO YADATA VE LO YADUN AVOTEYCHA LEMA'AN HODI'ACHA KI LO AL HA LECHEM LEVADO YIHEYEH HA ADAM KI AL KOL MOTSA PHI YHVH YIHEYEH HA ADAM

וַיְעַנְּךָ וַיַּרְעִבֶךָ וַיַּאֲכִלְךָ אֶת הַמָּן אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָדַעְתָּ וְלֹא יָדְעוּן אֲבֹתֶיךָ לְמַעַן הוֹדִיעֲךָ כִּי לֹא עַל הַלֶּחֶם לְבַדּוֹ יִחְיֶה הָאָדָם כִּי עַל כָּל מוֹצָא פִי יְהוָה יִחְיֶה הָאָדָם

KJ: And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

BN: And he afflicted you, and allowed you to go hungry, and fed you with manna, which you did not know, any more than your ancestors knew it; that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but by every thing that proceeds out of the mouth of YHVH does man live.


Matthew 4:4 is where Jesus quotes this.


8:4 SIMLAT'CHA LO VALTAH MEY ALEYCHA VE RAGLECHA LO VATSEKAH ZEH ARBA'IM SHANAH


שִׂמְלָתְךָ לֹא בָלְתָה מֵעָלֶיךָ וְרַגְלְךָ לֹא בָצֵקָה זֶה אַרְבָּעִים שָׁנָה

KJ: Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.

BN: Your clothing did not grow old upon you, nor did your foot swell, these forty years.


This works as historical retelling, a thousand years later, but not as live narrative, because the listeners would be fully aware of the clothes they are wearing, and have worn, and the state of their parents' and grandparents' clothing, and the condition of their ankles... unless Mosheh is being extremely ironic, but that would be quite out of character, and does not accord with the general tone of this work.


8:5 VE YADATA IM LEVAVECHA KI KA ASHER YEYASER ISH ET BENO YHVH ELOHEYCHA MEYASRECHA

וְיָדַעְתָּ עִם לְבָבֶךָ כִּי כַּאֲשֶׁר יְיַסֵּר אִישׁ אֶת בְּנוֹ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ מְיַסְּרֶךָּ

KJ: Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

BN: And you shall know in your heart that, just as a man chastens his son, so YHVH your god chastens you.


8:6 VE SHAMARTA ET MITSVOT YHVH ELOHEYCHA LALECHET BI DERACHAV U LE YIRAH OTO

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת מִצְוֹת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לָלֶכֶת בִּדְרָכָיו וּלְיִרְאָה אֹתוֹ

KJ: Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

BN: And you shall keep the commandments of YHVH your god, to follow his path, and to fear him.


YIRAH: Despite being told, 
at the start of the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4/5), that it was now all about love, once again the ancient "fear" is emphasised, and the cult will continue to practice sacrifice as a form of propitiation for the next thousand years.


8:7 KI YHVH ELOHEYCHA MEVI'ACHA EL ERETS TOVAH ERETS NACHALEY MAYIM AYANOT U TEHOMOT YOTSIM BA BIKAH U VA HAR

כִּי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ מְבִיאֲךָ אֶל אֶרֶץ טוֹבָה אֶרֶץ נַחֲלֵי מָיִם עֲיָנֹת וּתְהֹמֹת יֹצְאִים בַּבִּקְעָה וּבָהָר

KJ: For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

BN: For YHVH your god is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills...


TEHOM: See my notes at Genesis 1:2.

This is not a promise that applies equally and universally. The Beney Shim'on, for example, will get the Negev desert, which is arid, barren, infertile and hostile, and they will die out in just a few generations. Dan will get the southern portion of the Mediterranean coast, from Azah as far as what is now Tel Aviv - and lose it almost immediately to invading Pelishtim (Philistines); whereas Menasheh (west) and Asher will get the northern portion of the Mediterranean coast, the best land of all, sandy beaches, the wine-hills of Carm-El, but likewise have to deal with marauding Pelishtim ... Yisaschar will get the Yazar-El (Jezreel) valley, swampland rife with malarial mosquitoes... probably the best was Naphtali, which included the river Yarden (Jordan) and the Sea of Galilee and all the mountains of Korazim, great sheep-country, apples, wine, though somewhat rugged and limitedly arable...


8:8 ERETS CHITAH U SE'ORAH VE GEPHEN U TE'ENAH VE RIMMON ERETS ZEYT SHEMEN U D'VASH

אֶרֶץ חִטָּה וּשְׂעֹרָה וְגֶפֶן וּתְאֵנָה וְרִמּוֹן אֶרֶץ זֵית שֶׁמֶן וּדְבָשׁ

KJ: A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;

BN: A land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey...


8:9 ERETS ASHER LO VE MISKEYNUT TOCHAL BAH LECHEM LO TECHSAR KOL BAH ERETS ASHER AVANEYHA VARZEL U MEY HARAREYHA TACHTSOV NECHOSHET

אֶרֶץ אֲשֶׁר לֹא בְמִסְכֵּנֻת תֹּאכַל בָּהּ לֶחֶם לֹא תֶחְסַר כֹּל בָּהּ אֶרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אֲבָנֶיהָ בַרְזֶל וּמֵהֲרָרֶיהָ תַּחְצֹב נְחֹשֶׁת

KJ: A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.

BN: A land in which you shall eat bread without scarcity - you shall not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones contain iron, and out of whose hills you may dig brass.


Once again, these are politicians' promises. I commented at the end of the last chapter that Mosheh had been speaking for about as long as Fidel Castro or a Senator filibustering a bill, and still hadn't actually given a single law; I simply point out, half a chapter further on, that he still hasn't.


8:10 VE ACHALTA VE SAVATA U VEYRACHTA ET YHVH ELOHEYCHA AL HA ARETS HA TOVAH ASHER NATAN LACH

וְאָכַלְתָּ וְשָׂבָעְתָּ וּבֵרַכְתָּ אֶת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ עַל הָאָרֶץ הַטֹּבָה אֲשֶׁר נָתַן לָךְ

KJ: When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.

BN: And you shall eat and be satisfied, and bless YHVH your god for the good land which he has given you.


This verse is the source of the prayer kown as Birkat Mazon, the gratuity after meals - sorry, that should be Grace After Meals - but saying it the way I did allows me the excuse to note that both the tip we pay the deity and the one that the restaurant owner regularly steals from his staff unless you put actual cash in their hand, both come from the same Latin root, gratis, meaning thanks.


8:11 HISHAMER LECHA PEN TISHKACH ET YHVH ELOHEYCHA LE VILTI SHEMOR MITSVOTAV U MISHPATAV VE CHUKOTAV ASHER ANOCHI METSAVCHA HAYOM

הִשָּׁמֶר לְךָ פֶּן תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לְבִלְתִּי שְׁמֹר מִצְו‍ֹתָיו וּמִשְׁפָּטָיו וְחֻקֹּתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם

KJ: Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

BN: Beware lest you forget YHVH your god, by not keeping his instructions, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I am 
placing on the statute book for you today.


8:12 PEN TOCHAL VE SAVATA U VATIM TOVIM TIVNEH VA YASHAVTA

פֶּן תֹּאכַל וְשָׂבָעְתָּ וּבָתִּים טֹבִים תִּבְנֶה וְיָשָׁבְתָּ

KJ: Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;

BN: Lest when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built fine houses, and dwelt in them...


8:13 U VEKARCHA VE TSONCHA YIRBEYUN VE CHESEPH VE ZAHAV YIRBEH LACH VE CHOL ASHER LECHA YIRBEH

וּבְקָרְךָ וְצֹאנְךָ יִרְבְּיֻן וְכֶסֶף וְזָהָב יִרְבֶּה לָּךְ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר לְךָ יִרְבֶּה

KJ: And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

BN: And when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied...


8:14 VE RAM LEVAVECHA VE SHACHACHTA ET YHVH ELOHEYCHA HA MOTSI'ACHA MEY ERETS MITSRAYIM MI BEIT AVADIM

וְרָם לְבָבֶךָ וְשָׁכַחְתָּ אֶת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ הַמּוֹצִיאֲךָ מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים

KJ: Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

BN: That your heart be lifted up, and you forget YHVH your god, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of bondage.


And yay and verily, go sing this among the gated communities of Bay Harbor and Aventura, and in the ghettoes on the upper east side of New York, and in the foothills of Bentley Priory and St John's Wood, and in Pikesville and in Malibu, and along the Bridle Path... no, you see, that is irony, and Mosheh does not do irony.


8:15 HA MOLICHEM BA MIDBAR HA GADOL VE HA NORA NACHASH SARAPH VE AKRAV VE TSIMA'ON ASHER EYN MAYIM HA MOTSI LECHA MAYIM MI TSUR HA CHALASHIM

הַמּוֹלִיכְךָ בַּמִּדְבָּר הַגָּדֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא נָחָשׁ שָׂרָף וְעַקְרָב וְצִמָּאוֹן אֲשֶׁר אֵין מָיִם הַמּוֹצִיא לְךָ מַיִם מִצּוּר הַחַלָּמִישׁ

KJ: Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

BN: Who led you through the great and dreadful wilderness, in which there were serpents, fiery serpents, and scorpions, and arid soil where there was no water; who brought you water out of the flint-rock...


Alongside the bullying and the threats, the sulks and the tantrums, there is also a very deep insecurity about this divinity, who after all created these humans in his own image, so he will know better than anyone just how fickle and self-absorbed they are. But this is now approaching self-pity.


8:16 HA MA'ACHILCHA MAN BA MIDBAR ASHER LO YADUN AVOTEYCHA LEMA'AN ANOT'CHA U LEMA'AN NASOTECHA LE HEYTIVCHA BE ACHARITECHA

הַמַּאֲכִלְךָ מָן בַּמִּדְבָּר אֲשֶׁר לֹא יָדְעוּן אֲבֹתֶיךָ לְמַעַן עַנֹּתְךָ וּלְמַעַן נַסֹּתֶךָ לְהֵיטִבְךָ בְּאַחֲרִיתֶךָ

KJ: Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

BN: Who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your ancestors did not know, that he might afflict you, and that he might prove you, to do you good when you reached the end...


8:17 VE AMARTA BI LEVAVECHA KOCHI VE OTSEM YADI ASAH LI ET HA CHAYIL HAZEH

וְאָמַרְתָּ בִּלְבָבֶךָ כֹּחִי וְעֹצֶם יָדִי עָשָׂה לִי אֶת הַחַיִל הַזֶּה

KJ: And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

BN: And you say in your heart: My power and the might of my hand have brought me this wealth.


8:18 VE ZACHARTA ET YHVH ELOHEYCHA KI HU HA NOTEN LECHA KO'ACH LA'ASOT CHAYIL LEMA'AN HAKIM ET BRITO ASHER NISHBA LA AVOTEYCHA KA YOM HAZEH

וְזָכַרְתָּ אֶת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ כִּי הוּא הַנֹּתֵן לְךָ כֹּחַ לַעֲשׂוֹת חָיִל לְמַעַן הָקִים אֶת בְּרִיתוֹ אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבֹתֶיךָ כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה

KJ: But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

BN: But you shall remember YHVH your god, for it is he who gives you power to obtain wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he promised your ancestors, as it is on this day.

8:19 VE HAYAH IM SHACHO'ACH TISHKACH ET YHVH ELOHEYCHA VE HALACHTA ACHAREY ELOHIM ACHERIM VA AVADETAM VE HISHTACHAVITA LAHEM HA'IDOTI VACHEM HAYOM KI AVOD TOVEYDUN

וְהָיָה אִם שָׁכֹחַ תִּשְׁכַּח אֶת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ וְהָלַכְתָּ אַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וַעֲבַדְתָּם וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתָ לָהֶם הַעִדֹתִי בָכֶם הַיּוֹם כִּי אָבֹד תֹּאבֵדוּן

KJ: And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

BN: And it shall be, that if you forget YHVH your god, and go after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I forewarn you this day that you shall surely perish.


8:20 KA GOYIM ASHER YHVH MA'AVID MI PENEYCHEM KEN TOVEYDUN EKEV LO TISHME'UN BE KOL YHVH ELOHEYCHEM

כַּגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר יְהוָה מַאֲבִיד מִפְּנֵיכֶם כֵּן תֹּאבֵדוּן עֵקֶב לֹא תִשְׁמְעוּן בְּקוֹל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם

KJ: As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.

BN: Like the nations who YHVH is causing to perish before you, so shall you perish; because you would not hearken to the voice of YHVH your god.


And lo we have reached the end of another chapter, and he has Ponzi-promised them again, and he has threatened and bullied and berated them again... but still not a single piece of law has he instructed them.
