7:1 KI YEVIY'ACHA YHVH ELOHEYCHA EL HA ARETS ASHER ATAH VA SHAMAH LE RISHTAH VE NASHAL GOYIM RABIM MI PANEYCHA HA CHITI VE HA GIRGASHI VE HA EMORI VE HA KENA'ANI VE HA PERIZI VE HA CHIVI VE HA YEVUSI SHIVA GOYIM RABIM VA ATSUMIM MIMECHA

כִּי יְבִיאֲךָ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתָּה בָא שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ וְנָשַׁל גּוֹיִם רַבִּים מִפָּנֶיךָ הַחִתִּי וְהַגִּרְגָּשִׁי וְהָאֱמֹרִי וְהַכְּנַעֲנִי וְהַפְּרִזִּי וְהַחִוִּי וְהַיְבוּסִי שִׁבְעָה גוֹיִם רַבִּים וַעֲצוּמִים מִמֶּךָּ

KJ (King James translation): When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

BN (BibleNet translation): When YHVH your god brings you to the land of which which you are going to take possession, and casts out many nations before you, the Chiti, and the Girgashi, and the Emori, and the Kena'ani, and the Perizi, and the Chivi, and the Yevusi, seven nations greater and mightier than you...

There are other peoples of the region named at other times, but for this particular map there have to be seven, and there is a logic to these being the seven chosen. Remember that one of the principal goals of the rulers of the ancient world, in Meso-America and across Africa and China as much as the Midle East, was to reflect in earthly society the patterns of Life that are visible in the heavens, and the processes of life that are have been understood on Earth. So there is a king or Emperor, surrogating on Earth for the sun-god in the sky, and his queen is the moon, and their son-and-heir is the Earth. So there are twelve tribes, or city-states in the Greek world, or knights at the Arthurian Round Table, or disciples at the Last Supper table, or Merrie Men in Robin Hood's band of goodly bandits. So there are seven city-states, one for each of the seven planets, one for each of the seven days of the week - and as you go to the links you will easily be able to discern which planets, even which god or goddess - Chivim the easiest, because the name comes from the same root as Chavah, who we call Eve, and so we can say Venus, the only female planet (the moon is Yah, and she is in Chevron, which is Hittite/Chiti).


7:2 U NETANAM YHVH ELOHEYCHA LEPHANEYCHA VE HIKIYTAM HA CHAREM TACHARIM OTAM LO TICHROT LAHEM BRIT VE LO TECHANEH

וּנְתָנָם יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לְפָנֶיךָ וְהִכִּיתָם הַחֲרֵם תַּחֲרִים אֹתָם לֹא תִכְרֹת לָהֶם בְּרִית וְלֹא תְחָנֵּם

KJ: And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, andutterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

BN: And when YHVH your god delivers them up before you, and you go to war with them, then you shall utterly destroy them; you shall make no treaties with them, nor show mercy to them...


Can someone please remind me what are the Thirteen Attributes of YHVH. I believe they were listed in Exodus 34:6 and 7.


7:3 VE LO TIT'CHATEN BAM BIT'CHA LO TITEN LIVNO U VITO LO TIKACH LIVNECHA

וְלֹא תִתְחַתֵּן בָּם בִּתְּךָ לֹא תִתֵּן לִבְנוֹ וּבִתּוֹ לֹא תִקַּח לִבְנֶךָ

KJ: Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

BN: Nor shall you make marriages with them: you shall not give your daughter to his son, nor take his daughter for your son.


The phrasing is different for each gender, and sounds normal to us, but in fact it reflects a major difference between the Beney Yisra-El and these other people, a distinction of patrilocal and matrilocal marriage.

Compare Nechem-Yah 13:23 with this verse.

This business of racial purity, which has been an obsession in the Jewish world throughout its history, is something worth exploring among the non-Jews who take the Mark Twain position: "how come there are so very few of them, and yet their contribution to the world is a hundred times more than any other people and has been, continuously, for three thousand years, while other people have occasionally become great for a short while, then fallen back into mediocrity?" In the western world today we are radically opposed to any suggestion of racial purity, and encourage globalism with its racial as well as every other kind of homogenisation... as I say, worth a study and a discussion.


7:4 KI YASIR ET BINCHA MEY ACHARAY VE AVDU ELOHIM ACHERIM VE CHARAH APH YHVH BACHEM VE HISHMIDECHA MAHER

כִּי יָסִיר אֶת בִּנְךָ מֵאַחֲרַי וְעָבְדוּ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים וְחָרָה אַף יְהוָה בָּכֶם וְהִשְׁמִידְךָ מַהֵר

KJ: For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

BN: For he will turn your son away from following me, that they may serve other gods; so the anger of YHVH 
will be kindled against you, and he will destroy you very quickly.


But this isn't only about racal purity; it's also about assimilation, and actually the two need to be treated equally if you do engage in that study/discussion.

Who is "he" in this verse? Who are "they"? The first part of the previous verse dealt with the universal; the second part personalised it to the listener. But here it seems just to be a grammatical error.

CHARAH: Not the meaning that it has today.

The self-descriptions of a god who sulks, then tantrums, then destroys.


7:5 KI IM KOH TA'ASU LAHEM MIZBECHOTEYHEM TITOTSU U MATSEVOTAM TESHABEYRU VA ASHEREYHEM TEGAD'E'UN U PESILEYHEM TISREPHUN BA ESH

כִּי אִם כֹּה תַעֲשׂוּ לָהֶם מִזְבְּחֹתֵיהֶם תִּתֹּצוּ וּמַצֵּבֹתָם תְּשַׁבֵּרוּ וַאֲשֵׁירֵהֶם תְּגַדֵּעוּן וּפְסִילֵיהֶם תִּשְׂרְפוּן בָּאֵשׁ

KJ: But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

BN: But thus shall you deal with them: you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.


This verse is hugely important for when we come to Yehoshu'a and suggest that the conquest was less a military occupation than a shrine destruction, the "holy crusade" inferred by the next verse.


7:6 KI AM KADOSH ATAH LA YHVH ELOHEYCHA BECHA BACHAR YHVH ELOHEYCHA LIHEYOT LO LE AM SEGULAH MI KOL HA AMIM ASHER AL PENEY HA ADAMAH

כִּי עַם קָדוֹשׁ אַתָּה לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּךָ בָּחַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לִהְיוֹת לוֹ לְעַם סְגֻלָּה מִכֹּל הָעַמִּים אֲשֶׁר עַל פְּנֵי הָאֲדָמָה

KJ: For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

BN: For you are a holy people to YHVH your god: YHVH your god has chosen you to be his own treasure, out of all the people who are on the face of the Earth.


ADAMAH: Not the first time Deuteronomy has used this word rather than ARETS, a variation that doesn't seem to exist elsewhere in the TANACH.


7:7 LO MEYRUBCHEM MI KOL HA AMIM CHASHAK YHVH BACHEM VA YIVCHAR BACHEM KI ATEM HA ME'AT MI KOL HA AMIM

לֹא מֵרֻבְּכֶם מִכָּל הָעַמִּים חָשַׁק יְהוָה בָּכֶם וַיִּבְחַר בָּכֶם כִּי אַתֶּם הַמְעַט מִכָּל הָעַמִּים

KJ: The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:

BN: YHVH did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people, for you were the fewest of all peoples.


7:8 KI ME AHAVAT YHVH ET'CHEM U MI SHAMRO ET HA SHEVU'A ASHER NISHBA LA AVOTEYCHEM HOTSI YHVH ET'CHEM BE YAD CHAZAKAH VA YIPHDECHA MI BEIT AVADIM MI YAD PHAR'OH MELECH MITSRAYIM

כִּי מֵאַהֲבַת יְהוָה אֶתְכֶם וּמִשָּׁמְרוֹ אֶת הַשְּׁבֻעָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם הוֹצִיא יְהוָה אֶתְכֶם בְּיָד חֲזָקָה וַיִּפְדְּךָ מִבֵּית עֲבָדִים מִיַּד פַּרְעֹה מֶלֶךְ מִצְרָיִם

KJ: But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

BN: But because YHVH loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he swore to your ancestors, so YHVH has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Mitsrayim.


7:9 VA YADATA KI YHVH ELOHEYCHA HU HA ELOHIM, HA EL HA NE'EMAN SHOMER HA BRIT VE HA CHESED LE OHAVAV U LE SHOMREY MITSVOTAV LE ELEPH DOR

וְיָדַעְתָּ כִּי יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים הָאֵל הַנֶּאֱמָן שֹׁמֵר הַבְּרִית וְהַחֶסֶד לְאֹהֲבָיו וּלְשֹׁמְרֵי מִצְוֹתָו לְאֶלֶף דּוֹר

KJ: Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;

BN: Know therefore that YHVH your god, he is Elohim; the faithful god, who keeps covenant and mercy with those who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.


The statement of the transition point from polytheism to monotheism: which might be read mythologically as "YHVH has absorbed into himself all the other deities", or epistemologically as "all the elements and essences that comprise the universe are present in every living creature, from the smallest microbe to the largest planet: E (Elohim) = M (Matter/Earth and everything upon it) + C (Time and Space) [they didn't know that M was multiplied by C, not added to it, nor that C had to be squared; we only reached that probably inaccurate speculation very recently].

SHOMER...OHAVAV: See my note to verse 2, which this verse qualifies: apparently Exodus 34:6 and 7 is not univerally applied.


7:10 U MESHALEM LE SONAV EL PANAV LEHA'AVIDO LO YE'ACHER LESONO EL PANAV YESHALEM LO

וּמְשַׁלֵּם לְשֹׂנְאָיו אֶל פָּנָיו לְהַאֲבִידוֹ לֹא יְאַחֵר לְשֹׂנְאוֹ אֶל פָּנָיו יְשַׁלֶּם לוֹ

KJ: And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

BN: And repays those who hate him to their face, by destroying them; he will not be slack to he who hates him, he will repay him to his face.


LEHA'AVIDU: The third form of destruction that we encounter, after Nichretah and Hashmadah. Something that is IBUD is destroyed as though it had never existed in the first place, so even stronger than the other two. I paralleled the two above as pogrom and Holocaust; this is the full apocalypse.

And is it pure coincidence that the word for "worship" of the deity, which gets all the rewards, is from the root Ayin-Bet-Dalet, as is the word for that least rewarded of all living statuses, "slavery" - see my note at Deuteronomy 6:13 - while the one thing worse than slavery, dealt upon those who refuse the worship, comes from the root Aleph-Bet-Dalet? A phrase might be constructed in modern Ivrit, seeing a group of still-faithful Jews standing in prayer on the ramp at Auschwitz, the famous logo on the gate visible behind them, the opening of the showers in front of them: Avodah, Avodah and Ibud.


7:11 VE SHAMARTA ET HA MITSVAH VE ET HA CHUKIM VE ET HA MISHPATIM ASHER ANOCHI METAVCHA HAYOM LA'ASOTAM

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ אֶת הַמִּצְוָה וְאֶת הַחֻקִּים וְאֶת הַמִּשְׁפָּטִים אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם לַעֲשׂוֹתָם

KJ: Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.

BN: You shall therefore follow the instruction, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I am instructing you today, to do them.


It has taken Mosheh four full chapters of restating the same thing - "you will obey, or else" - and he still has not actually told them a single one of the laws yet.
