The Yehudit version of the text does not make a break at this point; the chapter-shift belongs to the Christian translations. This is still the same prophecy that was being delivered in 12:14.


13:1 BA YOM HA HU YIHEYEH MAKOR NIPHTACH LE VEIT DAVID U LE YOSHVEI YERU-SHALA'IM LE CHAT'AT U LE NIDAH

בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה מָקוֹר נִפְתָּח לְבֵית דָּוִיד וּלְיֹשְׁבֵי יְרוּשָׁלִָם לְחַטַּאת וּלְנִדָּה

KJ (King James translation): In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

BN (BibleNet translation): "On that day a water-source will be opened for the house of David, and for the inhabitants of Yeru-Shala'im, for their sins and their uncleanness...


BEIT DAVID... YOSHVEI YERU-SHALA'IM: As with the tribal and the secular-spiritual separations in the previous verses, so the distinction is being made here between the aristocracy and the common folk. The separations are purely sociological however, and in no way affect, modify or vary the expectations of the deity.

Both the spiritual hygiene and the physical washing; for Jewish ritual cleansing to be properly kosher, the water must come from a "living source", not a tap or a bottle or through a pipe.


13:2 VE HAYAH VA YOM HA HU NE'UM YHVH TSEVA'OT ACHRIT ET SHEMOT HA ATSABIM MIN HA ARETS VE LO YIZACHRU OD VE GAM ET HA NEVIY'IM VE ET RU'ACH HA TUM'AH A'AVIR MIN HA ARETS

וְהָיָה בַיּוֹם הַהוּא נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת אַכְרִית אֶת שְׁמוֹת הָעֲצַבִּים מִן הָאָרֶץ וְלֹא יִזָּכְרוּ עוֹד וְגַם אֶת הַנְּבִיאִים וְאֶת רוּחַ הַטֻּמְאָה אַעֲבִיר מִן הָאָרֶץ


KJ: And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

BN: "And it shall come to pass on that day," says YHVH, the Lord of the Hosts of the Heavens, "that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, so that they can no longer even be remembered; and I will cause the Prophets, and the unclean spirit, to pass out of the land...


ACHRIT: An aspect of NICHRETAH, which comes from the same root, but is the opposite of CHERET, . In the one case, the "cutting" of the covenant, to give it legal validity; in the other the "cutting off" of the covenant, usually by destruction of people, idols or some aspect of Nature. See also Zechar-Yah 9:10.

NEVIYIM: Yes, even the Prophets. Because there will no longer be any need for them.


13:3 VE HAYAH KI YINAV'E ISH OD VE AMRU ELAV AVIV VE IMO YELADAV LO TICHEYEH KI SHEKER DIBARTA BE SHEM YHVH U DEKARUHU AVIYHU VE IMO YELADAV BE HINAV'O

וְהָיָה כִּי יִנָּבֵא אִישׁ עוֹד וְאָמְרוּ אֵלָיו אָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ יֹלְדָיו לֹא תִחְיֶה כִּי שֶׁקֶר דִּבַּרְתָּ בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה וּדְקָרֻהוּ אָבִיהוּ וְאִמּוֹ יֹלְדָיו בְּהִנָּבְאוֹ


KJ: And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

BN: "And it shall come to pass that, if any man does undertake to prophesy, then his father and his mother who begat him shall say to him, 'You shall not live; for you speak lies in the name of YHVH'. And his father and his mother who begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesies...


DEKARUHU: The same verb was used in the previous chapter. (See John 19:34)

But surely this only speaks of the false prophets, where the previous verse dismissed all prophets, even the bringers of good news... No, not so - on the day that the Messiah arrives, human behaviour will be perfected, peace, truth and justice will reign harmoniously, and no one will ever need to use the extended warranty agreement on their faith again. On that day, all prophets will be transformed into false prophets, implicitly. On that day of universal peace and familyhood... parents will "thrust him through when he prophesies"... what an extraordinary paradox!


13:4 VE HAYAH BA YOM HA HU YEVOSHU HA NEVIY'IM ISH ME CHEZIYNO BE HINAV'TO VE LO YILBESHU ADERET SE'AR LEMA'AN KACHESH

וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יֵבֹשׁוּ הַנְּבִיאִים אִישׁ מֵחֶזְיֹנוֹ בְּהִנָּבְאֹתוֹ וְלֹא יִלְבְּשׁוּ אַדֶּרֶת שֵׂעָר לְמַעַן כַּחֵשׁ

KJ: And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

BN: "And it shall come to pass on that day, that every one of the prophets shall be ashamed of his vision, when he prophesies; nor shall they wear a goat-skin mantle to deceive...


Is he mocking himself? Is the goat-skin mantle of the Prophet equivalent to the grey suit of the politician?


13:5 VA AMAR LO NAV'I ANOCHI ISH OVED ADAMAH ANOCHI KI ADAM HIKNANI MI NE'URAI

וְאָמַר לֹא נָבִיא אָנֹכִי אִישׁ עֹבֵד אֲדָמָה אָנֹכִי כִּי אָדָם הִקְנַנִי מִנְּעוּרָי

KJ: But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

BN: "And he will say, 'Me? A prophet? I am a humble farm-worker. I have been a hired yeoman since my youth'...


So yes, exactly the equivalent of the grey suit of the politician.


13:6 VE AMAR ELAV MAH HA MAKOT HA ELEH BEYN YADEYCHA VE AMAR ASHER HUKEYTI BEIT ME'AHAVAI

וְאָמַר אֵלָיו מָה הַמַּכּוֹת הָאֵלֶּה בֵּין יָדֶיךָ וְאָמַר אֲשֶׁר הֻכֵּיתִי בֵּית מְאַהֲבָי

KJ: And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

BN: "And they will say to him, 'Then what are these wounds between your arms?' And he will answer, 'Ah yes, those come from the time when I was badly hurt at the house of my friends'...


MAKOT...YADEYCHA: Wounds, or stigmata? Obviously the latter, unless we believe his tale. But caused by nailing to the cross, or by self-flagellation with a leather whip? Or maybe he just spent a few days in Durham, resting his eyes...

ME'AHAVAI: Those who love me. Which of course could also mean his disciples, his apostles, his cult-followers, his electorate.

13:7 CHEREV URI AL RO'I VE AL GEVER AMIYTI NE'UM YHVH TSEVA'OT HACH ET HE RO'EH U TEPHUTSEYNA HA TSON VE HASHIVOTI YADI AL HA TSO'ARIM

חֶרֶב עוּרִי עַל רֹעִי וְעַל גֶּבֶר עֲמִיתִי נְאֻם יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת הַךְ אֶת הָרֹעֶה וּתְפוּצֶיןָ הַצֹּאן וַהֲשִׁבֹתִי יָדִי עַל הַצֹּעֲרִים

KJ: Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

BN: "Awake, sword, against my shepherd, and against the man who is my fellow," says YHVH, the Lord of the Hosts of the Heavens. "Smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. Then I will turn my hand upon the little ones...


And no doubt he will be happy, dashing those little ones upon the rocks. This, at least, is what I presume Zechar-Yah is alluding to, for that is the closing line of Psalm 137, and that Psalm has been a leitmotif throughout this book. The practice belonged to the days before Messiah David established Yeru-Shala'im, when Moloch reigned in Yevus and Shalem, and the firstborn were sacrificed by casting them down into the valley of Hinnom - Gey Hinnom, or Gehennna, the other major image for the Apocalypse.


13:8 VE HAYAH VE CHOL HA ARETS NE'UM YHVH PI SHENAYIM BAH YIKARTU YIGVA'U VE HA SHELISHIT YIVATER BAH

וְהָיָה בְכָל הָאָרֶץ נְאֻם יְהוָה פִּי שְׁנַיִם בָּהּ יִכָּרְתוּ יִגְוָעוּ וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁית יִוָּתֶר בָּהּ

KJ: And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.


BN: "And it shall come to pass, throughout the land," says YHVH, "that two-thirds of its inhabitants shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be permitted to remain...


YIKARTU: The same word "cut off" that we saw in verse 2, but here explained much more graphically. This is "cut off" as in genocided, ethnically cleansed, massacred and atrocitied. The word Sho'ah - Holocaust - is not used, because it is not to be done by gas and crematorium, though we were given to understand in the previous chapter (12:6) that fire-pans would be involved, and no question that something of the same order is true in the following verse.


13:9 VE HEVE'TI ET HA SHELISHIT BA ESH U TSERAPHTIM KITSROPH ET HA KESEPH U VECHANTIM KIVCHON ET HA ZAHAV HU YIKR'A VISHMI VA ANI E'ENEH OTO AMARTI AMI HU VE HU YO'MAR YHVH ELOHAI 

וְהֵבֵאתִי אֶת הַשְּׁלִשִׁית בָּאֵשׁ וּצְרַפְתִּים כִּצְרֹף אֶת הַכֶּסֶף וּבְחַנְתִּים כִּבְחֹן אֶת הַזָּהָב הוּא יִקְרָא בִשְׁמִי וַאֲנִי אֶעֱנֶה אֹתוֹ אָמַרְתִּי עַמִּי הוּא וְהוּא יֹאמַר יְהוָה אֱלֹהָי

KJ: And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

BN: "And I will bring that one-third through the fire, and refine them as silver is refined, and test them as gold is tested. Then they will call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say, 'This is my people', and they will say, 'YHVH is my god' ...


HA SHELISHIT: One-third. Spine-tingling coincidence - there were about 18 million Jews in the world, circa 1939.

As with the previous chapter, there is no break in the Yehudit version, but only in the Christian translations.
