Genesis 10:10 calls it one of the cities built by Nimrod in Shin'ar (Mesopotamia) alongside Bavel (Babylon) and Erech (Warak/Uruk). We must presume therefore that it was Agade, which Sargon founded in about 2300 BCE , the capital of the land known to archaeologists as Akkadia (formerly Sumer), rather than a city by the name of Akkad.
Akkad in Yehudit came to mean "a fortress", "citadel" or "castle".
